June 2007
As President of Walker Industries I
am pleased to announce that the Province of Ontario has approved our
environmental assessment (EA) for future waste disposal capacity.
I am also pleased that on May 24th 2007 Regional Council approved a
Regional Policy Plan Amendment to permit the operation of the South Landfill.
The
Walker East Landfill, located in the City of Niagara Falls, has reached about
90% of its approved capacity and will close in two to three years. The
East Landfill provides mainly for the disposal of residual (i.e.,
post-diversion), non-hazardous industrial, commercial and institutional
(IC&I) solid wastes from the Niagara Peninsula, and elsewhere in the
province of Ontario, with the single biggest contributor being waste generated
in the Regional Municipality of Niagara.
Since 1887, Walker’s family-owned firm has been
contributing to the social and economic development of the City of Niagara
Falls, the Regional Municipality of Niagara, and the Province of Ontario.
We want to continue to provide services to our customers and provide an
important waste management solution for the Niagara region and the province.
Our waste management business has been built on
serving the waste management needs of IC&I clients in the Niagara Region and
other parts of Southern Ontario. The
approval of our EA is the first important step to replacing the disposal
capacity represented by the East Landfill. Replacing this disposal capacity will
mean that we can continue to provide cost-effective and environmentally
responsible waste management services for the Niagara region's industry, and
thus contribute significantly to the region's overall economy.
We can also continue a range of related services anchored by this
disposal capacity including composting, landfill gas collection and utilization,
a public and small business waste drop-off facility, and recycling of asphalt,
concrete, glass and other industrial, commercial and institutional materials.
The
environmental assessment has taken us almost four years to complete. It includes
detailed impact assessment studies on public health and safety, social, cultural
and economic dimensions, the natural environment and resources, and different
ways to provide disposal capacity. You can review a copy of the EA report
on this website.
At the completion of the EA process I want to thank
everyone who has contributed. I especially want to thank those neighbours and
government agency staff who have contributed a great deal of input to our EA
Committee, and everyone who took the time to participate in any of the 13 public
open houses and community workshops we’ve hosted during the course of the
project.

This website provides a comprehensive record of the
detailed environmental assessment we conducted under
Ontario’s Environmental Assessment Act.
